The Paris Collection, the center of the world's fashion industry, consists roughly of the haute couture and pret-a-porter genres. A few Koreans had shown their work in pret-a-porter, but this woman was the first Korean designer to ever have been officially listed for the haute couture division.
In the process of arranging the interview, the PR agency responsible for publicizing her Korean show boasted that the designer had a degree in philosophy from Seoul National University. Naturally during the interview I asked when she had attended SNU and what had motivated her to change her focus from philosophy to fashion. The designer answered ambiguously and her equivocating made me suspicious. When I returned to my office,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I called the SNU alumni association to find out the truth. No such student had ever entered or graduated from that university.
I wished I didn't have to write the interview. The challenge she accepted and the success she saw in Paris was enough for a news story. The interview left a bitter taste in my mouth, but I sincerely wished her every success in Paris. I also hoped that if she achieved that kind of success,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], she might free herself from the inferiority complex over her true educational background.
But to my disappointment,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the designer continued to implicitly present her false academic background whenever she met Koreans. Regretfully,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I believe that this attitude has made her somewhat of a loser.
In the fashion circles of Paris nobody knew her as the designer with the SNU degree. It is much more difficult and challenging for a foreign designer to win recognition in Paris than it is to enter SNU. She drew attention for her own talent and creativity,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and was justly celebrated on several occasions by the French press. "I worked and worked as if my back were to a cliff at every moment,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," she said once.
Despite her substantial success in Paris, she came to look for a business opportunity in Korea,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], citing her false identity as the Paris haute couture designer with the SNU degree. This was the beginning of her end. In the meantime she was being forgotten in Paris,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which had brought her to fame in the first place. In the fashion world of Paris there are many designers from around the world seeking their fortunes, and many drift into oblivion. In this world, designers are supposed to put all their effort into presenting new and creative designs every season. A designer can hit the skids in an instant if she lets down her guard even for a moment. I heard that the Korean designer had another show in Paris recently,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but failed to attract much attention.
Her story gives us a hint as to how we might find a solution to our preoccupation with academic background. Lying about our credentials is rampant in Korean society, across all fields,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], because our society exceedingly rewards those who present a handsome academic resume. That means that we lack the professionalism necessary to truly evaluate creativity and ability. Ours is still an amateurish society that gives high marks to those with a glossy facade. Now is the time to burst this bubble entirely.

A few days ago,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], President Roh Moo-hyun said during a luncheon with independence activists and their families at Cheong Wa Dae, ��Due to the conflict between the left and right around liberation, the history of the independence movement has not been fully revealed. I think history should be revealed as correctly as possible, regardless of what evaluation has been made on the ideology of our ancestors during the independence movement period.�� We will give a nod to the opinion if he is a professor studying the history of the independence movement, not a president who has to maintain and protect the legitimacy and constitution of the Republic of Korea. Immediately after the president made the remarks, the government began to come up with follow-up measures to actively find, screen and credit leftist independence activists.
The first question arising is about how far the history of the leftist liberation movement will be unearthed and how many leftist independence activists will be awarded. As the president said, there had been liberation activists in the leftist camp. That is not a new fact the president discovered. Representative leftist independence activists include indigenous communist forces and people who cooperated with the Chinese and Soviet Communist Parities for the liberation of Korea.
The constitution stipulates in the preamble that the Republic of Korea inherits the tradition of the Korean provisional government, which was established on the occasion of the March 1 Independence Movement in 1919. The stipulation makes it clear that the Republic of Korea is the legitimate successor of the government. Although there were leftists within the provisional government,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], key communists,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], whether they were pro-Chinese or Soviet, or indigenous leftists,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], did not participate in the transitional government and did not acknowledge the legitimacy of it. As a president of the Republic of Korea,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which inherits the legal tradition of the provisional government, President Roh is tasked with the constitutional responsibility to protect the legal tradition. We are curious about the reason why now the president has brought forward the independence movement of leftists who denied the legitimacy of the provisional government.
The constitution considers the provisional government as the foundation of the Republic of Korea in terms of the history of establishing the country as a liberal democratic one, standing against forces trying to communize this country after liberation. The president, who should know the history, mentions the restoration of the leftist liberation movement and describes Korea as a country filled with people slyly pursuing self-interests and the history of Korea as one of people who have become powerful though they betrayed the country.
It is true that the neutral faction that tried to unite the right and the left before and after the independence and leftist activists within the transitional government have been neglected. However, The activities of the people have been steadily and explosively studied since the 1950s and the 1980s. Even the biography of Park Hun-young,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the symbol of indigenous communists, and the history of the South Korean Communist Party have been published.
Of course, the vacuum in the history should be filled. It is not only because of the conflict between the right and left in the course of the foundation of the Republic, however, that the government has not unearthed the history of communist movement after the Japanese colonization so far. Another reason is that not only the North's communists, but also the South��s key communists continuously staged guerrilla wars to overthrow the Republic, and in addition,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], some of them went to the North and returned to the South at the outbreak of the Korean War, only to take initiative in judging and executing people in every parts of the nation. This is not a written history but an experience all Koreans living in the present feel deeply themselves. Despite this shared experience, the government is hurrying to reveal the communist movement history, which is of no difference from the independence movement history they claim they are trying to reveal,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and teach it to students and youths. Why are they trying to do that? There must be urgent reasons.
In his inauguration address, Roh expressed his view on Korea saying, ��Korea has a wrong climate in which justice is defeated and opportunists are influential.�� Since then, he has persecuted the modern history of Korea whenever he has an opportunity. When the Presidential Commission on Suspicious Deaths decided to categorize North Korean spies and communists as ��consequent contributors to democratic movement,�� he never made a worrying comment on that. It is also illiberal to exclude the history of the left. But it is not comparable to the behaviour of the president acting as if it were the government��s historical mission to disparage and exclude Korea��s leading forces.
The constitution of Korea states that the president has a responsibility for defending the existence and constitution of the country. Roh, however,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], argues for the restoration of honor for the left and verbally attacks those who dedicated themselves to founding,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], defending and protecting the country by calling them ��unjust,�� self-protecting,�� opportunistic,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],�� and ��running against the times.�� This makes us wonder if he is really faithful to his responsibility stated in the constitution.
If we achieve re-unification through our efforts, the national history of the divided country would become one as a united nation. We never mandated Roh,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], however, to engage in correcting past history or unearth the communist movement. We, as people who elected him as president one and half year ago, do order him, as the president working in 2004, to devote himself to maintaining the constitutional tradition and protecting and supporting the public.
